experiment 1 (paraphrase)

Homolinguistic Translation of a Paragraph from the Novel “Pretties” by Scott Westerfield. The setting is a society in the distant future where citizens are given all their material desires and standardized aesthetic surgery in exchange for systematic brainwashing. The main character Tally, a brainwashing resistant resistance member, is approached by the leader of a secret police organization, Dr. Cable. Dr. Cable then gives the standard sci fi “come to the dark side... we have cookies... chocolate chip cookies! Chocolate chip cookies who's gooey deliciousness cannot be fathomed!” speech.

“Remember flying on a hoverboard Tally?” Cable said, her dull eyes igniting with cold fire “That feeling of being alive? Yes we can make people pretty inside- empty and lazy and vapid-but we can also make them bubbly as you call it. More intense than you felt as an ugly, more alive than a wolf stalking it's prey.” (pg 133)
So here's my first translation.
“You do recall the feeling of flying?” Cable sneered, her lusterless expression alight with a deathly chill flame, “The vividness of it all? We can empty out peoples souls. Send them into the world unburdened like kites aloft on a peaceful wind, bending to the logic of our strings. You'd do best to bear in mind that we have the power to enhance the spirit as well, to set the very heart aflame with the throb of a machine and the burst of gunfire. We can give you wings Tally. We can give you rockets with all the speed in the world!”

Over lunch with my friend I also came up with this second one in which the antagonist Dr. Cable has been replaced with fellow evil cyborg mastermind Catz, from the infamous mistranslation of the video game “Zero Wing”
“Hover boards bring feeling alive know” Catz said eyes flat but warm cold. “We give board feeling inside. All gentlemen can be misty, vacated. However, we will bring sensation of wolf hunting barbecue!”

(BTW: All in all the book is a worthwhile read. So if you have a high tolerance to scifi superhero fantasy type things and futuristic Valley Girl slang you might want to give it a look. It didn't take me too long to get through it since it was intended for ages 11- 15. Yeah I started reading the series as a kid and never got around to finishing it until just last night. Also I hear zero wing is really fun. Even though I never got a chance to play it.)

The plot of the movie is the exact same storyline as Pocahontas. Like freakishly similar. The British/Earthlings come to Virginia/Pandora to dig up the local delicate ecosystem for shiny rocks. One of the intruders goes native, has some fun running around the woods, learns the importance of living in harmony with nature and marries a princess.
It's just like that... only with Dinosaurs. Lots of Dinosaurs! The gran finale is dinosaurs fighting attack helicopters and giant robots. I guess you could get technical and say they're dinosaur like creatures, since it's another planet but... yeah. So if you see this movie don't expect heartwarming relationships and intricately engineered plot twists. Just go to see Futuristic technology rumble with the late Cretaceous.
Also it helps that they replaced that guy in the purple pilgrim hat from Disney's Pocahontas with Duke Nukem. Yes, Duke Nukem is in the movie. They call him something different and made him a Bad Guy but you should still be able to pick him out.

Sorry for the delay in postings.
I didn't really get a chance to scan in my final projects yet.
Christmas was lots of fun. My mom took over the responsibility of Christmas Eve dinner from Grandma this year and my dad made some sushi. It's not really Italian but close enough to tradition as it includes fish. I'm glad I got a chance to see my grand parents again as well as my friends Sarah and Dan, my parents, Jaron's parents and my younger brother and sister (I love you guys) .The Holidays were pretty much a mad rush to see everybody over the course of a week. So right now I'm recovering from about five holiday parties and a seven hour flight in addition to four final exam projects. Really, taking four studio classes seemed like a great idea until final projects. At least there's light at the end of the tunnel. Next semester will be my last at Hartford!
I'm supposed to be doing some sketches for my senior thesis project over the break. Right now I don't even want to think about drawing but I'll start doodling a bit and maybe get some thumbnails worked out over coffee tomorrow.
Oh and Jaron and I are in the embryonic phases of planning out wedding. We've narrowed the date down to "Summer 2011". Lauren has helped me pick out a dress, which is a bit backwards as we haven't booked a location yet. I'm just glad I settled on a groom. That part seems to take the most effort :P

Annies Mac and Cheese Mod

ingredients:
One box of Annie's white cheddar macaroni and cheese
two tomatoes, chopped
two cloves of garlic, chopped
thyme and rosemary

Combine Tomatoes and Garlic in small sauce pan, then cover and cook on low heat.
Add Rosemary and Thyme to the tomato mixture
Meanwhile prepare the shells as usual.
When it comes time to add the sauce, simply pour the cheddar cheese mix into the tomato mixture and pour the whole thing on the macaroni.

I spent the past three days being an utterly shameless fan girl.
James Gurney liked my headband...

Anyway he was here because there's a fantasy art show at our school with some of his dinosaur paintings in it. They've also got two Kinuko Craft paintings (squeals with joy) and some artists who i didn't even know before but now absolutely love. Including this one landscape painter who some how managed to mix Hudson river school with Chinese landscape. Which is just so cool and inventive and REALLY REALLY COOL!!!
Ok I won't make you sit through much more of this. I'll just come back later with some more names and titles from the show and then you can google them and you know understand my heartfelt admiration.

I sewed some fabric and foam from an old worn out laptop case into a messenger bag as lining. The designs on the pockets were done in black sharpie marker during a particularly dull high school assembly.

salvaged item: Cardboard Organizer (carboardinizer)

Item Type: pink cardboard box (labeled good luck fortune cookies) and lots of advertisements from local take out restaurants.
Obtained through: The box was lying on the lid of a garbage can by the university bookstore. The restaurant ads get left on our doorstep by people who can't read the "No fliers or Menus" notice taped to the front door.
Modifications: I folded the adverts into origami boxes and placed them in the cookie box as compartments. Then I cut some flowers shapes out of the left over scrap and glued them to the lid with some bits of ribbon and plastic beads for flair.
Current Use: I gave it to my friend Rayna who is using it to store extra pieces from her collection of anime figurines.

Notes: I got the material for the tutu at a church yard sale. I was volunteering there and the woman in charge said I could take home as much crafts material as I wanted since they weren't selling too well anyway.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Ok, everybody Listen up!
October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Serious business jah? This is a message to everyone out there who wants to buy key chains, snacks, toys, shoes or any other amount of various stuffs with little pink ribbons attached. It's great that you care about cancer patients, it's heartening that corporations know you care about cancer patients. But in all honesty their main job is to sell you Barbie dolls and yogurt, not provide health care and research to help people suffering from serious illness. In actuality a sizable portion of your purchase will go toward making more little trinkets with cute pink ribbons. So do your homework! Find a legit charity that benefits breast cancer patients and send them a check. No you won't get an adorable teddy bear or delicious fat free yogurt, but that wasn't the important part anyway.

I had a lot to do today. And this weekend will be busy too. So I'm spending tonight staring off into space.
Oh and J came over for hot chocolate. He's a pretty awesome guy and we should hang out more but he forgot to take my phone number when I wrote it down for him.
I also saw some cute raccoons on the walk back home. It was over by this little stream that connects to the Hog river. Three of them, a mom raccoon and two kits, ran across the path right as I was going by. I guess they were trying to escape the rising water level. It's been raining all afternoon.
I like it though. Rain is relaxing and the cold didn't bother me too much because I had my wool coat and the scarf that Mom knitted for me. I actually really love the fall, when everything is just winding down and getting quieter and colder everyday. there's a peacefulness to it. Especially when you can stay inside through the worst of the rain.

I don't think I could ever have a twitter account because
a) I am a very slow typist when it comes to text messages.
b) I can't describe what I'm doing/thinking at any given moment in short phrases. Right now for instance I'm sitting in my bedroom eating a banana, typing and watching the traffic go by. I'm also analyzing the pattern of shadow created by light coming through the screen on my window. It looks especially lovely matched with the note I scribbled out on the back of a bright pink expired coupon. Oh look a goose just flew by. Back to the coupon, I'm really glad that I started tearing up old bits of paper to use as notes instead of relying on a dwindling supply of post it's. I keep on loosing the packages before I get a chance to use them. Loosing post it's is a minor tragedy because I actually have to spend money on them. Of course it's less stressful to lose little bits of torn up copy paper. I've been saving bits of paper that are too dark to write on as well, for art projects and admittedly horrible attempts at making paper cranes.
I rest my case...

This room is an island, floating on the beat of car radios and the wooshing protest of air resistance against on coming traffic. Four bedroom walls are covered in newspaper clippings that serve as cheap insulation from the emotional frigidity of a sickly sweet Indian Summer. Thank you for entering reality by walking in the door. I wasn't sure before but I know that you're planning, sincerely planning, to be here a while longer. That after the oranges and yellows of September decay to bare bones, morning gray you'll still wake up in the bed next to mine, fall into slippers and shuffle off to the soft duet of toothbrush bristles and a low flow shower head. After all, your name's on the lease. More importantly, more legal and binding than flimsy little penned in words, is the once unfamiliar scent of organic, French soap that has made it's home in our closet.

Unofficial business cards I drew out for when I sell arts and crafts things at school. I made them by doodling in an old Lisa Frank notebook and writing my info on the back. Most of the designs got handed out yesterday but I managed to save my three personal favorites long enough to scan them in. Later this week I'm planing on printing out some more of these fliers on the computer... parting with the originals is too painful but I liked the fact that all of the cards were very different from each other so I'll try to keep at least some variety in the printed versions.

parasol/ humane society thrift shop

A few weekends ago my fiance and I found this thrift store a couple blocks away from his apartment. The whole operation is run out of this one woman's eight car garage and proceeds benefit a local program offering free neutering of pets and captured stray cats and dogs. Yes you read right, it's an eight car garage. It was her ex husbands idea to build it and it was her idea to use it as a charity shop after they separated.
The great thing about thrift stores in suburban areas is that they are influenced by what I like to call The Bored House Wife Effect. It's not caused by housewives specifically, it's just that the suburbs have a high proportion of women, employed out side the home or not, with free time. In their free time many of these women like to make their home more cozy, which leads them take up needle work, crochet, knitting, sewing, scrap booking and any variety of activities that involve gluing fake flowers onto other objects. Bored women in the suburbs have a tendency to over estimate their supply of craftiness and spare time. This means that a great deal of craft supplies are passed along to second hand retail. As a result the humane society thrift shop, humbly marked by a simple sidewalk sign reading "garage sale", offers a great deal of yarn, ribbon, baskets, fake flowers and plastic beads for sale at absurdly low prices. So even though it looks fancy, I got this parasol for about $2 worth of materials (including an old umbrella ribbon flowers and thread) and a couple hours of sewing.

Arts and Crafts (from the Victorian Book of Days by Avon)
An argument might be made for the Victorian style of ornamented interior decoration, crammed with memorabilia, having evolved from the need to display the handiwork the ladies produced. Possibilities available to them included making screens by pasting decorative cut-outs on wooden panels and varnishing them; painting on glass, china and terra cotta; photography; woodcarving; modeling in clay; fret work (with a saw); modeling in leather watercolor painting; making wax fruit and flowers; embroidery of every kind; macrame- the list is endless. No one sat with idle hands. Every woman's magazine contained new directions for gifts and decorative objects, many of which would be found under the tree at Christmas. For older men, uncles, and brothers tasseled smoking caps, embroidered slippers and cigar cases were considered to be thoughtful and appropriate gifts. (Princess Alexandra's daughter gave her future husband a picture frame she made with the fabric of her first court dress.) For parents, bookrests, handkerchief satchets, carriage boots, knitted scarves and painted fans were some of the many suggestions. There were few objects other than major pieces of furniture that enterprising ladies and girls were not encouraged to attempt. Enough examples have survived to show that attempt they did, some with more polish than others. As always, the thought counted as much as the present, and many a lumpy pincushion was cherished and given a place of honor for the little hands that made it.

Yesterday was Brilliant!

Bored with sitting on the couch, alternately struggling with online classes and Galactic Civilizations 2 I decided that yesterday would be a draw from life day. So I got out my sketchbook and went to the park (I will post my sketches as soon as I can get my hands on a scanner)Along the way I met a dog in a wheelchair,picked up a couple empty soda cans, was congratulated by a hippie for my efforts to help Mother Earth and saw a lot of people on racing bicycles wearing spandex. After drawing some really pretty flowers, I stopped off at a coffee/new age type gift shop and listened to folk music while reading up on the Druid Revival. Then on the way back I decided to take a detour through a nearby industrial park. I discovered The Den of Slumbering Construction equipment! I also pulled a bouquet of flowers and a scarf out from a dumpster.
Once i got back home I cleaned off the scarf and added some crochet flowers as fringe. I'll take pictures once I can find my camera.

went into Seattle today, found a cool antique shop. I hope they don't get upset at me for taking pictures. Anyway they had sewing supplies and a huge selection of old sci-fi magazines. Yes, two obsessions in one convenient location. Today was a good day indeed.
Oh yeah, the best way to cook asparagus is in a fry pan, with butter, a sprinkling of red pepper flakes and a couple spoonfuls of lime juice.

What have I been up to anyway?

Well for starters, I got my first commission outside of school. Yes that's right, somebody other than my professors and classmates liked my paintings. In fact they liked them so much they want me to illustrate an English language textbook to be used in a Cambodian High School. Yes, you read it right, Cambodia. It's a country in South East Asia, famous for traditional dances and the Angkor Wat Temple. (I really hope I'm getting the spelling right) . I'm going to start drawing a cut away of a typical American home this afternoon. (If I write it down here it'll keep me from procrastinating; honest!)

Also, I've been keeping up with my arts and crafts stuff. Right now I'm sewing up a makeup bag.
My goal is to actually sell some of the things I make this summer. Last year, I made a dozen or so decorative hair combs and ended up keeping half of them for myself and giving the other half away as Christmas gifts. That did save a trip to the mall though.

Arts and crafts are generally a solitary and contemplative activity. Of corse on this day of love and general sappiness, solitary and contemplative will easily devolve into depressing and mildly pathetic. So what are the dateless to do? Well, with a large supply of colored tissue paper and a small collection of empty and cleaned yogurt containers you and your friends can have a paper bouquet party! You can even entice your romantically attached friends to join in for a few minuets and make a pretty gift for the bf/gf , that is not only inexpensive, but displays their cleverness and dexterity. Guests without dates will go home with a lovely bunch of flowers to display on their bookshelves, wear in their hair, or hand out to family members in liu of cards.

For the record I can't stand having to admit that I'm still a college student. It has a weird feeling to it. Like stating "Hi I can drive and vote and everything but I need to spend another four years or so in a state of extended semi-adolescence racking up massive amounts of debt and awkward social experiences before I can officially enter the real world. "
but I kind of have to now since (drum roll) It's finals week! (whoohoo). which means I've been working on three projects at once for the past three days!(the horror) but I passed my drawing critique and finished that portrait for watercolor and handed in my essay on Mr./Ms. English Artist of my choice. So all I have to do is study for that Test on Thursday.
I miss sleep.
and my room's a mess and I think I accidentally put the left over Chinese food in the deli container that I kept my beta fish in while I cleaned his tank.

Hi there again. Sorry for the recent lull in posting
To make up for it I've finally uploaded some images from my sketchbook dating from Sept.- Dec. of 2008. I think an appropriate theme could be "dreamy ladies" or maybe that's too corny. Hopefully I'll get a chance to post some more drawings before I leave to visit my lover. Tragically I could only get a plane ticket for the morning of Christmas day ( it hurts thinking about it) but I'm not about to let the poor guy spend his entire holiday alone. So yes spending Christmas morning on a long plane ride sucks, spending Christmas evening with my man totally worth it
Anyway, I happened to come across the book "Fresh Fruits" in the library. Which is amazing! I tend to get very excited about seeing people dressed up in funky costumes and the " Fruits" photo albums of Japanese street fashion have been a source of amusement and inspiration to me since high school. Course then I was more interested in spooky Gothic Lolitas. Now my taste has expanded to include frilly punk, futuristic neon stuff and twenty-year olds who want to dress like pretty magical princesses; all of which looks a hell of a lot cooler than it sounds. So yeah I'm wearing a modified Heath Ledger as the Joker disguised as a nurse costume today, even though I'm only going out to run some boring errands. Wait scratch that, I'm wearing this costume because I'm going out to run some boring errands. Also it's gray and cold and slightly soggy out so the scenery just needs more pink in it.
